Gabriola Island (pop. 4,500) is one of the Southern Gulf Islands of British Columbia, located in the Strait of Georgia, between Vancouver Island and the mainland of BC, approximately 3 miles (5 km) east of Nanaimo on Vancouver Island . It is similar in many ways to the other Gulf Islands in that it embraces a strong creative community. Nature has proven to be one of the island’s best contributing artists, having created the Malaspina Galleries masterpiece which dates back to the Ice Age, and is a work in progress as the erosion continues. Discover this cave-like sandstone formation resembling a massive cresting wave. At the other end of the island view other aged sandstone artworks of a different form that include over 50 petrogylphs left by First Nations people. The petrogylphs capture a moment in time that will leave you feeling overwhelmed by the earth’s timeless nature.

Famous both for its laid-back atmosphere and for its stunning marine vistas, Gabriola is a favourite haunt for sea kayakers and divers. The Gulf Island’s temperate weather seems tailored to outdoor recreation, offering plenty of opportunities for boating, beachcombing and fishing. There are also plenty of recreational possibilities on land, with three exceptional provincial parks and several attractive beaches to walk, hike or cycle, and golfing at the Gabriola Island Golf & Country Club.

Late spring, summer and fall are the best times to experience Gabriola, which hosts a variety of art, music and literary events throughout the year. Advance reservations are advised when planning to stay during the popular summer and fall months.
